Summer Arts Apprenticeship program

What is Street-Level's Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program (SAAP)?

Our annual Summer Arts Apprenticeship Program (SAAP) is an intensive 8-week, media arts internship program for youth ages 14 to 19.  The program meets for four (4) days a week, 4.5 hours each day, starting the week of June 21st.

  • Youth work with adult artist mentors to strengthen their skills in audio production, video production, graphic design, or photography.

  • Youth produce original work based on a theme that explores social, cultural, and political issues relevant to their lives.

  • Participants will collaborate to design and install a group exhibition at the end of the program.

Program activities will include classroom learning, media lab time, field trips, and one-on-one mentoring sessions with adult media artists. SAAP also emphasizes the collaborative process and creative exchange between youth artists and their mentors, as well as the youth artists and their peers.

This Year's Theme is... “experiencing space”

Participants will complete research on different public and private spaces in Chicago; identify the historical, social, psychological significance of these locations, including their relationship to power and choice; and then turn their findings into multimedia art installations.
